Endowed ready for Ballyclare tie as Schools Cup bid gathers pace
RAINEY Endowed 1st XV have got off to a flying start in their Schools Cup campaign recording two away victories to Antrim Grammar and local rivals Royal School Dungannon and have yet to concede a point.
The 2nd round fixture against Antrim Grammar took place at Allen Park on Saturday 12th January.
Rainey came up against a very determined Antrim side who have vastly improved over the last few seasons.
Although Rainey enjoyed the majority of possession, they found it hard to break down Antrim’s scramble defence, however some naive decision making from Rainey made it easier for Antrim to defend.
The Rainey tries came from Ronan McKernan and captain Paul Heaney, with a conversion added by Ben Simpson. Rainey had to show their defensive qualities in the later stages of the game but it held strong and Rainey held out to record a 12-0 victory.
The 3rd round saw Rainey being drawn away to Royal School Dungannon. Although Rainey had already defeated Dungannon earlier in the season, the Magherafelt side knew there was no room for complacency against their local rivals.
Rainey started very strongly and maintained good territory in the first half. However it was some solid tackling in their own 22 that saw rainey overturn the ball and make their way down the pitch to score in the corner.
Paul Heaney was the try scorer and Ben Simpson added a touchline conversion. Dungannon had their fair share of possession in the second half but a lack of creativity and outstanding defence from Rainey meant that Dungannon failed to get on the score sheet. The final whistle went and Rainey where able to celebrate another fantastic victory away from home.
A special thanks goes out to all the supporters who travelled to both Antrim and Dungannon and cheered the team on to victory.
Rainey have been drawn at home to Ballyclare High in the fourth round on Saturday 9th February. Kick off is at 11am. All support will be very welcome!
