LAST Saturday Cookstown Olympic made the short journey to play Antrim Rovers and after a tight game they came away winners with a one nil score line. The first half was nip and tuck with Olympic having a lot of possession and they made this pay after 20 minutes when they worked the ball up the field to Connor O’Hare and his run saw a cross that Liam Hoy headed to the back of the net.
Olympic continued to dominate but came up against a lot of offside decisions that did not go their way. Then disaster nearly struck after 42 minutes when a long range back pass from midfield was intercepted leaving the Antrim forward one on one with Olympic keeper Ryan Devlin.
However, Ryan made a name for himself executing a perfect dive at the attacker’s feet to take the ball and save his team mates blushes. Cookstown Olympic started the second half well and after 52 minutes O’Hare put Liam Hoy through for a shot that the keeper saved, while 13 minutes later Hoy rose tall at a corner to head home only to see the post deny him this time.
Cookstown were dominating now and on 72 minutes O’Hare played one over the top for Ryan O’Neill to chase but his lob was short and the keeper gathered it eagerly. Lee Mitchell then provided a great cross after 77 minutes that Liam Hoy met with a header but this time the bar saved Antrim while Hoy then turned provided after 84 minutes when after a good run down the right he crossed to the back post and a John Gilmore volley cannoned back off the bar.
The end could not come quickly enough for Antrim as they were being overrun by Cookstown but it was a good team performance and a well earned three points to put them at the top of the table for Christmas. Team: R Devlin, C O’Reilly, D Campbell, J O’Neill, E McSloy, C O’Hare, L Hoy, R Scullion, L Mitchell, R McMenemy, R O’Neill. Subs D Doherty, J Gilmore and M Meenan.
