Cookstown Olympic notes

COOKSTOWN Olympic made the long journey to Carrickfergus last Saturday to take on the early league leaders Woodlands and came away with a comfortable three one win. Olympic applied the early pressure and were playing the better football with two chances falling to Mark Loughran in the first twenty minutes, which he narrowly failed to convert.

The match then turned in Olympics’ favour on thirty six minutes when a Connor O’Hare header crossed the line only to see the Woodlands number eight pull it back with his hands for a penalty.

This caused him an early walk back to the changing rooms and then Ryan O’Neill converted the spot kick. Olympic then doubled their lead on forty three minutes when a break down the right wing was pulled back by Ryan O’Neill and Connor O’Hare was on hand to volley home. In the second half the expected pressure was exerted early on by Woodlands but Olympic keeper Ryan Devlin was in good form. The Woodlands pressure did pay off with a goal after fifty nine minutes and Olympic went off the boil a bit.

However they rallied and the impressive Connor O’Reilly played a great through ball to Richard McMenemy after seventy five minutes and he easily beat the keeper for three one. The match had now swung back to Olympic and they had squandered two further chances from Declan Doherty and Liam Hoy. Star man was awarded to Connor O’Hare. Team R Devlin, E McSloy, M O’Hare, M Meenan, D Campbell, C O’Hare, L Hoy, M Loughran, C O’Reilly, R O’Neill and R McMenemy. Subs L Mullan, L Mitchell and D Doherty.
