Cookstown Olympic entertained AFC Carrick last Saturday in the second round of the Canada Trophy and lost 3-2 after a very poor first half performance.

The visitors opened the scoring after 5 minutes when the attacker headed to the net unchallenged from a corner while the lead was doubled after 16 minutes from a quick break out of defence.

Olympic nearly pulled one back after 25 minutes when a Connor O’Reilly header went just wide but Carrick went three nil up on 36 minutes from a short back pass that was intercepted.

Olympic started the second half quickly and after 48 minutes had pulled a goal back when Crippy Eastwood floated a pass to Ryan Devlin at the edge of the box and his excellent volley gave the Carrick keeper no chance.

Carrick sensed the Olympic recovery and dug in but Olympic got a second goal after 75 minutes when Crippy Eastwood sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

The Carrick keeper then kept his team in the match as he pulled off a number of saves the best of which saw him claw a Devlin header off the goal line. With Olympic unable to get the third goal to go to extra time it was Carrick who go on to the next round.

Team. S Conway, L Mullan, D McCabe, M Meenan, E McElduff, D McGuckin, C O’Reilly, C Eastwood, K Loughry, R Scullion, and M Hughes. Subs R Devlin, J O’Neill and N McKenna.
