Football: Magherafelt Reds suffer Irish Junior Cup loss

Magherafelt Reds 1 Beann Mhadaghan 4

Saturday saw the Reds host Belfast side Beann Mhadaghan in the 2nd Round of the Irish Junior Cup. On what turned out to be a very wet day the Magherafelt men started the stronger of the sides.

Early in the game, a free kick was awarded to the Reds box and a well worked set piece was curled inby Loughran.

The Belfast men got their equaliser after being awarded a penalty soon after. The home side pushed to take control of the game with Overend, SJ Devlin and McDonald coming close.

Both teams were playing good passing football trying to hit each other with fast breaks in this end to end game, but it was Beann Mhadaghan how took their chance and went ahead when an attacker was left unmarked in the Reds goal mouth.

Cummings in the Reds goal pulled off a few finger tip saves to keep the score low and hold on to the chance of getting something back but unfortunately another goal was conceded leaving the Reds trailing 3-1.

Player- manager Steven Jordan introduced himself and Jordan Neill to the game and started to create chances with Neill in midfield with Sinclair and Montague to break up any Beann attack.

In the 90th minute the visitors were awarded their second penalty which was scored as the referee signaled full time.

Contrary to the scoreline it was a game which could have seen either side come away the victors and an entertaining game of football played in good spirit by both sides. The Reds would like to wish Beann Mhadaghan all the best for the season.

Reds: Cummings, Taylor, Anderson, S. Devlin, Brady, Overend, Sinclair, Loughran, Montague, SJ Devlin, McDonald, Jordan, Neill, Martin.
