The Sky Blues travelled to Ballymena to play Carniny minus a whole host of players and produced a wonderful performance to come away with the three points.

Shane Henry and Harry Mulholland - making their first team debuts - were called up from the reserves along with Doole and Spinu.

The Blues took a little time to get used to the 3G pitch but got into their stride after about 15 minutes with McAlynn beginning to control the game and it was he who had the first shot of the game well saved by the keeper. McAlynn had another effort deflected away for a corner from which Rafferty’s header was cleared off the line.

The Blues were well on top and Hassan poked a shot just wide, Doole hit the bar, Spinu had an effort well saved by the keeper before Rafferty missed a glorious opportunity.

Carniny almost made the Blues pay for those missed opportunities when their centre forward missed a free header at the back post and the half ended 0-0.

Carniny started the second period well, but the Blues defence held firm and gradually they began to take control again.

Ten minutes in, man of the match McAlynn cut in from the left and unleashed a thunderbolt which flew past the keeper. Devlin had an effort cleared off the line shortly after.

Carniny equalised against the run of play when their left winger drilled a shot into the bottom corner giving O’Neill no chance.

This setback didn’t deter the Blues and with an hour gone McAlynn played a defence splitting pass for Doole to run through and slot home.

Carniny threw on their subs to try to get back into the game but the Blues held firm and were unlucky not to increase their lead before the end.

A great team performance with Henry and Mulholland having great debuts.

McAlynn was the Blues man of the match with an outstanding performance.
