Ballymena 0 Mid Ulster Ladies 0
Following last week’s cup victory, Mid Ulster once again travelled to Ballymena for a league fixture on Wednesday night.
Played at the Show Grounds, the pitch was significantly better than that used the previous Friday and both teams were able to play a more attractive brand of football.
Mid Ulster started strongly with Sarah Connolly’s early shot well saved by the Ballymena keeper. Her strike partner Adele Gillespie went close running onto a through ball but once again the Ballymena shot stopper was off her line smartly to snuff out the danger.
Whilst Mid Ulster were bossing possession it was not all one way traffic and on the counter Ballymena showed their threat resulting in a shot hitting the outside of the post and another drawing a good stop from Jacqueline Burns in the Mid Ulster goal.
The half continued in the same vein, Mid Ulster dominating but Ballymena dangerous on the counter and it will have been the visitors that were more disappointed going into the break with the scoreline 0-0.
The second half followed the same pattern with Samantha Kelly and Cathy Rees going close.
Substitutions followed with Mid Ulster going to three at the back to try to find a breakthrough but some great defending and goalkeeping from Ballymena denied them.
The Mid Ulster defence also had to be on their toes as Ballymena were proving dangerous on the break but assisted by Chloe McCarron and Alice Smith in midfield they nullified any potential threat.
As the clock ran down Mid Ulster went close first with Sarah Connolly and then with Samantha Kelly. The latter’s effort being stopped by a superb save but it was not to be for the visitors and the whistle blew with a final scoreline 0-0.
