Home win for local ladies

Mid Ulster Ladies 2 Newbridge Predators 0

THE Mid Ulster Ladies played host to Newbridge Predators on Wednesday night past at Fairhill, on a beautiful summer evening.

The home side had the first chance of the game when Mykylea Stewart went close with an early diving header after an excellent free kick delivered from Hayley O’Donnell. Preds responded with another effort from distance, this time Billie Simpson tried to catch Mid Ulster keeper Jackie Burns off her line but the ball sailed over the bar.

The game was physical but fair and an injury to Claire Rooney gave the girls a chance to top up their fluids mid way through the half. With Claire able to continue the game restarted and Simone Magill and the home spectators thought they should have had a penalty after Simone was floored in the box by the Preds defence. The referee waved play on and the game continued. Simone picked herself up off the ground and minutes later she got her reward after good work from Claire Rooney and Ruth Brown set her up to score the opener on 23 minutes. Preds responded by winning a corner but this came to nothing and Mid Ulster again went on the attack. More good link up play between Simone Magill and Ruth Brown saw Simone Magill score number two for the home team on 33 minutes as she followed in on Ruths shot which had been well saved by the Preds Keeper. More good pressure followed from Mid Ulster as the half drew to a close. Half time Mid Ulster 2 Newbridge Predators 0

After a bit of a delay due to a problem with the Preds match card the game finally restarted. The break had done neither team any good but Mid Ulster had the first strike of the game when Simone Magill let fly from the edge of the box. Preds keeper was equal to it and moments later she showed her quality once again denying Simone with a great one on one save. The rebound fell to Abigail Edwards who just couldn’t direct the ball between the posts.

One such attack saw her feed Claire Brown to Emma McFarland to Simone but once again the Preds Keeper broke up the move. Preds were still creating chances but were mainly restricted to long range efforts as Claire Brown, Claire Rooney, Lisa Richardson and Emma McFarland kept things tight at the back. As the half progressed both teams made changes with Louise Murphy replacing Abigail Edwards and Rebecca Edwards replacing Claire Brown for Mid Ulster. Hannah Turkington also replaced Mykylea Stewart who had impressed on the right wing as opposed to her normal left back position. Mid Ulster continued to press but the scoreline remained as it was with 3 points for the home team with a 2-0 victory.
