THREE local ladies celebrated a stunning victory for the Northern Ireland Ladies , as they overcame former European and Olympic Champions Norway at Mourneview Park.
Local trio, Simone Magill, Adele Gillespie and Sarah McFadden were all part of the squad that produced a famous 3-1 victory over their illustrious opponents.
Norway who are ranked 12th in the world arrived at Mourneview Park on Saturday hopeful of adding another three points to their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign. However, they were undone by a tenacious and hard working Northern Irish side who ran out easy winners in the end.
Time and time again Northern Ireland repelled several Norwegian attacks. Goalkeeper Emma Higgins was in fine form as she made several stunning stops to prevent the away side from finding a way back into the tie.
Bellaghy woman and Sunderland Ladies striker Sarah McFadden once again led the line for the international side. Youngster Simone Magill played a crucial role in the victory as well as she came off the bench to set up Rachel Furness who added the third and final goal of the game. Adele Gillespie was unused sub during the tie. It was a famous win for Northern Ireland over a side who are ranked 52 places above them in the world rankings.
Northern Ireland will now travel to Hungary and will hope to continue their fine run of form with a positive result in Hungary.
