Cookstown Celtic got their campaign off to a winning start with a 9-2 victory over CTA Athletic in the first round of the Marshall Cup on Saturday.
Celtic started brightly and went ahead when new signing O’Neill latched on to a long ball and knocked the ball past the onrushing keeper.
The Cookstown men then doubled their lead when a clever ball from McCloskey found Maguire and he fired past the keeper giving him no chance. Celtic’s third came from the penalty spot which Maguire coolly slotted away.
Cookstown got their fourth just before half time when O’Neill was on hand to tap home for his second of the game. Celtic were quick out of the blocks in the second half and increased their lead when Maguire raced clear and beat the keeper to complete his hat-trick. Maguire then got his fourth of the game when, despite being forced wide, he delightfully chipped the ball over the keeper to make it 6-0. Celtic continued to dominate and got their seventh when Hanna met a cross from O’Neill and his bullet header give the keeper no chance. Celtic then got their eighth when good work from O’Neill found McCloskey who tapped the ball home. Celtic completed their scoring when Doherty wriggled free in the box and curled a fine effort with his left foot into the top corner. There was further time for Athletic to register a couple of consolation strikes that had little bearing on the result.
