A Sean McConnell goal shortly before half time whistle was enough for Moyola Park to secure victory over Tobermore.
McConnell’s strike puts the home side into the quarter-finals of the Craig Memorial Cup where fellow NIFL Championship Two side Portstewart will provide the opposition at Mill Meadow on Saturday 28th.
McConnell cracked the ball past Tobermore United goalkeeper Paul Wells after a defence splitting pass by Chris Dowie from the centre circle.
McConnell shot over the visitors’ crossbar in the opening minute. United’s Sean Henaghen’s 25 yard shot after 19 minutes was comfortably saved by Marty Farniok, who transferred to Moyola Park from the visitors during the summer.
At the other end Dowie hit a rasping shot from well over 20 yards which was deflected for a corner. On 37 minutes a Gareth Stewart corner was headed narrowly wide of by Sean McCabe.
Gareth McLaughlin had a golden opportunity to equalise for Tobermore early in the second half, his close range shot being well blocked by Farniok.
Steven Long blasted the ball into Farniok’s side netting. Following a foul on Ryan Winton by Mark Waddell, David McClements shot wide from the free kick just shy of the hour.
Tobermore’s James McGahan was fortunate not to pick up a second yellow card following a rash tackle .
Robbie Lucas shot over and as Tobermore chased an equalier Michael Walsh came closest to scoring a second when he cheekily chipped an advancing Wells only to see the ball hit the crossbar.
