Coleraine U16 1
Moyola Park U16 4
In excellent conditions and on a fine playing surface Moyola Park U16 met Coleraine U16 in the semi-final of the North-West and Coleraine District Youth League Cup on Saturday past.
From the kick-off Coleraine went on the attack and following a clever defence splitting pass, the visitors found themselves a goal down after only one minute of play. This attacking game of Coleraine’s continued for ten minutes after their goal with Moyola kept pegged back in their own half.
Eventually the visitors settled and began to assert themselves on the game. The solid defence of Kyle McElhatton, Nathan Swann, Daniel McCormick and Danny Devlin began to gel better after those early nerves, allowing the midfield to take more control in that area, with Aidan Keenan and Tomas McLaughlin gradually taking over, with good support from wingers Michael “JJ” Henry and Paudy Martin.
However, Coleraine defended stubbornly and held out until just before the break when Moyola Captain Rory Young ghosted in to convert Martin’s low cross, leaving the game nicely balanced at 1-1 for the second half.
Shortly after this a cross from the left found an unmarked Coleraine player whose strong header was well saved by Matthew McErlain in the Moyola goal. Following this Coleraine attack the ball fell to Aidan Keenan, and linking well with Tomas McLaughlin the ball was fed through to Johnny Downey who cleverly knocked it on to Paudy Martin on the right wing. Skipping past the Coleraine defence, Martin chipped the ball over the advancing ‘keeper to give Moyola that vital lead.
Coleraine fought hard to level the game but, with only ten minutes remaining, they conceded a free kick just out-side their own area, and Kyle McElhatton stepped up to blast home a tremendous goal.
A few moments later, “JJ” Henry took possession of the ball just inside his own half, and running at the Coleraine defence, he evaded all tackles and with only the ‘keeper to beat he lobbed the ball over his head only to see the ball crash against the crossbar. “JJ” somehow managed to hit the returning ball and score with a stunning overhead kick to leave Moyola convincing winners.
Every member of the Moyola team played well and it may be a bit unfair to single out any one player: the defence were very strong, Aidan Keenan and Tomas McLaughlin were in control in midfield after that early scare, Paudy Martin was excellent on the right wing, the forwards worked tirelessly, in fact a great overall team performance.
Moyola U16: Matthew McErlain, Danny Devlin, Kyle McElhatton, Nathan Swann, Daniel McCormick, Michael “JJ” Henry, Tomas McLaughlin, Aidan Keenan, Paudraig Martin, Rory Young (c), Johnny Downey, Marty Crozier.
So Moyola U16 play Ballymoney in the Cup Final at the Coleraine Showgrounds in a couple of weeks time, date to be confirmed.
Next up for Moyola is a return to Coleraine on Tuesday evening to play the same Coleraine team in a re-arranged league fixture.
