Newry City Res 2 Coagh Utd Res 1
COAGH made the long trip to Newry Showgrounds on Saturday with a host of changes due to injury and call ups to the first team, but against a much fancied Newry side they performed admirably under the circumstances.
However, after 7mins it was the home side that took an early lead, a cross from the left was inadvertently turned in by Robbie Allen to leave Kyle Nelson in the visiting goal no chance. Coagh gradually improved as the half went on causing the home side a few problems.
With their second corner of the day , Coagh caused the home keeper problems and as the Newry defence failed to clear Matty Kempton took the chance an blasted the ball into the roof of the net to put Coagh on level terms after 27mins.
Both sides tried their luck from range in the remaining minutes, Campbell and Ally McGuckin for Coagh. The closest before the break was from a Newry shot hitting the post.
With the game now looking fairly even it was going to be something special or something unfortunate to lose it, and it was the latter for Coagh, On 53 mins a long range effort from Newry came back off the post and hit the in coming Andy Neil on the chest to give the advantage back to the home side.
Coagh tried hard to get back into the game pushing men forward at every opportunity, both sides having a penalty shout each as time ran out. Coagh made a change after 74mins Clive West replacing Keith McGaw. But Newry held on for three points and revenge for their Cup Final defeat two weeks ago.
