Ballymoney United U16 1 Moyola Park U17 3

On Saturday past, Moyola U17s went to the Joey Dunlop Centre to play Ballymoney U16s in another league encounter.

Moyola’s injury list continues to grow and threaten their season. Without realising it, Kyle McElhatton had played through the previous week’s game with a broken nose. Although in obvious pain, Kyle only found out the extent of this injury later in the week, and was ruled out of this game.

However, given Ballymoney are on average a year younger, Moyola may have expected an easy game. This was far from the case.Ballymoney played above themselves and caused Moyola some early scares with Moyola keeper, Conor Doherty, having to be at the top of his game.

About ten minutes into the game Moyola began to settle and a lovely through ball from Rory Young sent Jonny Downey through on the keeper.

The Moyola man calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to leave the visitors one up at half time. In the second half, Moyola’s dominance became apparent and a lot of pressure was applied on the Ballymoney goal. A cross from Barry Murphy on the right hand side was tapped in for the second Moyola goal by Kyle Colgan.  Moyola continued to control the game and about five minutes from the end, Daniel McCormick scored with a low drive from the edge of the box.  However, Ballymoney U16s fought back and scored right from the kick off.

Moyola endured a nervy last few minutes, following some good Ballymoney pressure, but eventually ran out deserved 3 - 1 winners.

Moyola: Conor Doherty, Danny Devlin, Rory Young (Capt), Paddy McElroy, Paddy Young, Conor Taggart, Barry Murphy, Aidan Keenan, Nathan Swann, Jonny Downey, Kyle Colgan, Daniel McCormick.

With four league games remaining and the cup competition about to start, Manager Robin Martin, paid tribute to his young charges by saying how hard they have worked and how they realise the need to show a strong commitment between now and the end of the season if they are to repeat their League victory of last season or if they are to go one better in the cup this year by lifting the trophy, having narrowly lost in last year’s final.
