Northern Ireland’s Ciaran Gibson is standby goalkeeper for the English Schools

NORTHERN Ireland’s teenager goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson, ironically is a standby goalkeeper for English Schools under 18 FA national team following a successful series of trials.

Gibson, currently plays for Halifax Town in the Blue Square North and is now on standby for the English schools ahead of the Centenary Shield.

Ciaran’s father Alan is from County Tyrone and alongside his two brothers, Keith and David, they were involved at Coagh United and Cookstown United.

The former Sheffield United trainee qualifies for the English schools side as he currently attends school in England. In 2010 he trained with the Northern Ireland Under 17 squad who are managed by Paul Kee.

“For those thinking I’m confused about my nationality”, Ciaran explained, “It’s because of my parentage I qualify to play for either the Northern Ireland, England or Jamaican national football teams. And for School Boy internationals my selection is based on the country I go to school in which is England!

“I’m very pleased to have had opportunity with both the Northern Ireland U17 national squad and the English Schools FA team. And I would love to be involved with both in the future.”
