BELLAGHY footballer Sarah McFadden is within touching distance of participating in the Olympic Ladies Football tournament this summer.
The Northern Irish international is hoping to be named in the Team GB team by former England coach Hope Powell.
McFadden, who currently plies her trade for Sunderland AFC Ladies, was named in a short-list of players a few months ago and she told the Mid Ulster Mail that she was hopeful of making the final cut.
“I am extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the Olympics and I am delighted to have even made it onto the short-list.”
Confirmation of the final squad is to be released within the next few weeks. There is a possibility that a number of Northern Irish internationals will be named in the Olympic panel.
A Team GB scout has been keeping a close eye on the fortunes of Northern Ireland. A scout was present at the Cyprus Cup and also visited Mourneview Park for a recent qualifier.
However, McFadden will turn her immediate thoughts to Northern Ireland’s next qualifier away to Norway.
The local ladies secured a stunning victory over the former World Champions, when they defeated them by 1-0 at Mourneview Park. McFadden will hopefully be involved in the squad alongside Magherafelt teenager and Mid Ulster Ladies striker Simone Magill, who despite still being at school, is an influential member of the Northern Irish Ladies international side.
