LOCAL international footballer Sarah McFadden has been selected for the Great Britain Women’s University Football team, which takes part in the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.
McFadden. who hails from Bellaghy is part of the British squad which will take part in the games from 12th August to 23rd August. Team GB will face hosts China, Canada and Chinese Taipei in Group A.
Sarah has been preparing for the event by training twice each day and she has been set an intensive training program in preparation for the games.
“China have built a 60,000 seater stadium specifically for the games and in GB’s game against them it is expected to be sold out.”
The Bellaghy footballer is no stranger to competing on the international stage, as she has represented her country on a number of occasions. McFadden has also played club football in both America and Iceland and is looking forward to the games.
It has been a fantastic year for McFadden as she has celebrated some major success with her university and also her club side.
“This year my University team won the British University championship beating Leeds Metropolitan University in the final. Leeds Met have five England internationals and three other girls who have recently been selected to go to the games with myself. Northumbria have a few girls including myself who play for Sunderland Ladies and then the majority of the team play non league football. But against all odds we ended up winning the final, a feat that no one could ever have expected.
“This epic win happened just two weeks after I had won the National Premier League with Sunderland Ladies.”
On her return from China, Sarah has a fifteen thousand word dissertation to complete for her Masters in Sports Coaching at Northumbrian. In addition, Sarah has a series of fixtures for the Northern Irish side in the European Championship qualifiers, which will take place in the Autumn.
