CYFC U12s 6 Banbridge Town 0
Last Saturday the young sizzlers faced Banbridge Town at Havelock Park for the third time this season after recent comprehensive wins in both the league and shield.
This fixture came at the right time for manager Gerry Quinn to give squad players much-needed match time after tough fixtures against Ballymena, Loughgall and Shankill Boys.
In the opening minute striker Craig Bigger saw a snapshot rise agonisingly over the bar from fifteen yards, followed by a decent save from the Banbridge keeper from a Tiernan Mackle drive.
Bigger then drove wide from a cute Thomas Mackle cross from the right before Tiernan Mackle’s header was cleared off the line from a Harry Wilson free-kick as Cookstown threatened to run riot.
Shane Murphy and Lee Glasgow both saw good chances saved by the busy Banbridge keeper, before Murphy struck home after good work by Bigger on fifteen minutes.
Thomas Mackle then sprinted half the length of the pitch with the ball and thundered in a left-foot drive which was again saved by the impressive Banbridge keeper.
A terrific header from Bigger then allowed Glasgow to christen his new boots with a well-taken goal on halftime.
Into the second half and substitute Robert McLean saw a powerful drive fall wide before Luke Patterson buried Cookstown’s third on 39 minutes after good work from captain Jamie Marlin.
Thomas Mackle scored his first goal for the club, latching unto a melee of rebounds from a Murphy corner on 39 minutes.
Marlin then broke clear to make it five, before unselfishly playing in Harry Wilson to complete a resounding victory.
It was a good workout for all the players involved, but undefeated Bloomfield in the NI Youth Cup will be an altogether different kettle of fish on Saturday at Orangefield, kick-off 11am.
