Thistle prove no problem to Celtic

Lurgan Thistle 1

Cookstown Celtic 5

Cookstown Celtic returned to league action after a three week break when they travelled to Lurgan to take on Lurgan Thistle and came away with an important 5-1 victory.

Unsurprisingly it took Celtic time to find their feet after a long break as both sides were sloppy in possession early on.

Celtic began to settle and took the lead midway through the first half when a teasing cross from Martin was diverted past the Thistle keeper by his own defender.

Celtic, now more relaxed, started to create more chances and were unlucky not to increase their lead through efforts from Doherty and McVey.

Celtic did double their advantage just before the half time whistle when good link up play by Maguire and Doherty found McOscar at the edge of the box who rifled home to make it 2-0 at half time.

Lurgan Thistle came out of the traps quickly in the second half and the Celtic rearguard had to be in top form to deal with the danger.

Celtic weathered the early storm and got the third and decisive goal when McGahan found space in the box and fired past the keeper at his near post.

Celtic now began to play with much more freedom and added their fourth when good play by McCloskey set up Maguire who made no mistake with a fine finish.

Celtic completed their scoring when a fine cross from McGucken was failed to be cleared by the Thistle defence and the ball fell to Danny Maguire who blasted past the keeper.

Thistle grabbed a consolation when their striker pounced on a loose ball and fired in from close range to take the shine of a good Celtic performance.

This Saturday Cookstown Celtic will be on their travels as they take on Aghalee Village in the league with a 2pm kick off

Training continues on Wednesday nights at MUSA starting at 8pm sharp. Everyone is welcome to attend
