Fintona are only an hour away from Intermediate football after they gained revenge for their championship defeat earlier in the season with a surprisingly comfortable win over Brocagh at Father Hackett Park in Augher yesterday afternoon.
It was a game that the Pearses were always in control of and their reward is a clash with their namesakes from Galbally who will be doing all in their power to protect their Intermediate status. Fintona dominated early on and after a dozen minutes they had four points on the board through Niall Mellon, Aaron McCarney and a Thomas McGrath brace. Padraig Bell finally opened Brocagh’s account after seventeen minutes but moments later the winners got in for their first goal. Mark Donnelly and Niall Mellon were involved in the build up with McCarney finishing to the net past Emmetts’ keeper Christopher Cross. Bernard Cassidy and Niall Mellon tagged on points and while Brocagh had the final say of the half through defender Eugene Ryan they still trailed 1-6 to 0-2 at the interval.
In the opening minute of the second half McGrath increased Fintona’s lead before Brocagh enjoyed their best spell of the game. Ciaran Donnelly scored from play as well as from a free with Declan Hughes and Colm McFaul also on target to leave it 1-7 to 0-6 going into the final quarter.
Fintona though then reasserted their dominance and 1-4 without reply ended the game as a contest. McCarney converted two frees as well as adding one from play before the hard working Mark Donnelly got his name on the score sheet. With three minutes to go the Pearses struck for their second goal when Donnelly provided the assist for namesake Jason to fire home. In injury time at the end of the game Paul O’Neill converted a penalty after Michael Hughes had been fouled but it was scarcely a consolation score at that stage.
