Castledawson Under 16s played Dungiven at a wet and windy Broagh on Friday night. Both teams were missing a few regular players, however this was a very interesting game for all spectators to watch with the result in doubt to the final whistle. The midfield partnership of Megan Thompson and Eimear McElwee worked well together, covered a lot ground for their team. An untimely injury to Niamh Bell forced her to take early leave from the game in which she was playing well in defence. Erin McKenna entered the fray and was more than capable of coping with the Dungiven forwards as she consistently cleared the lines.

Captain for the night Aoibheann McElwee was excellent throughout the game in corner forward and will have gained a lot of confidence from this! At the other end of the field, Francess Connery in goals really excelled in this position and kept her team in the game with a number of fine clearances. Frances was ably assisted in defence by Rebecca Doyle and Eimhear Mulholland and could not be faulted by their efforts. Emer Bradley linked well with Megan Kearns to score a great goal which left the half time score Dungiven 1-2 Castledawson 1-0.

A rejuvenated Castledawson side took to the field in the 2nd half and were much more determined from the start. Tory Hastings and Leona Brown marshalled the half back superbly and were very effective in their long clearances.

Half forwards Emma Robinson and Brigid McMullan have really improved with each game, Brigid dazzled the Dungiven defence with her skills and Emma capped off a fine performance with a well taken goal.

Emer Bradley popped up again to score another goal and then a point to leave the Dawson girls a point up with less than 2 minutes to play. Dungiven were able to get up the field and fire a goal into the net, unfortunately this was to be the last score of the game.

Castledawson can take great heart from this performance with Aoibheann, Francess and Emer Bradley particularly impressive. The U16’s are home to Newbridge in the league on Monday night at 6:30pm. All support welcome.
