THE Magherafelt Council Chairman, Ian Milne, hosted a Civic Reception for Mr Henry Downey to celebrate his selection as a member of the Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century.

Councillor Milne said,

“To be selected as a member of the Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century was a most remarkable achievement. You were there in the company of some of Hurlings all time stars. I am sure that in your wildest dreams you never thought that you would be mentioned in the same breath as All Stars such as Henry Sheffin, Nicky English, Sean Silke and Niall McInerney each of whom have All Ireland medals and 12 in total between them.

Continuing on he stated that he knew Henry was known mostly for his footbal skills and that he will always be remembered for bringing Sam Maguire to Derry in 1993. He said that Henry was also a fantastic hurler and possibly one of the best in Ulster.

In addition it was a wonderful achievement to have been the only player from the North of Ireland to have been selected on the Team of the Century panel.

In conclusion, the Chairman said that he knew that Henry would be the first to admit that what he achieved in all aspects of his sporting life would not have been possible without the support of his wife Michelle, his family and his friends.
