MAGHERAFELT made the short journey to neighbours Loup on Saturday and came away on the wrong end of a 1-12 to 0-12 scoreline.
The defining goal of the game came from Aiden McVey in the fifth minute and Magherafelt struggled to close the gap for the rest of the match.
They almost succeeded fifteen minutes into the second half as E McGuckin, with only the keeper to beat, was unlucky when his pile-driver of an effort rebounded off the bar to safety. The first half was high scoring ending 1-8 to 0-9 in favour of the Loup.
Magherafelt’s best player up front was C Spiers who scored five points, ably assisted by points from J Monaghan, J Young, P Purvis and E McGuckin. The second half was a more physical low scoring affair with Magherafelt tagging on three points from C Kearns, C O’Brien and G McKay. However three A O’Neill frees kept the Loup in the lead to finish three point victors. Magherafelt B Gillis, P Collins, D O’Neill, P Quinn, P Purvis (0-1), J Keenan, P Kielt, M O’Brien, E McGuckin (0-1), C Kearns (0-1), C O’Brien (0-1), P McCabe, J Young (0-1), J Monaghan (0-1), C Spiers (0-5). Rossa Thirds 4-24 - 1-2 Doire Colmcille
The Thirds began their end of season run with an easy win against a young and inexperienced Doire Colmcille side. This was a very solid team performance but with tougher games to come the Thirds will have to play a lot better to win their final two league games.
Ollie Cunningham ,Paul Brown, and Sean Dillon played well at the back and Kieran McGlone along with Niall Bryson controlled the midfield. Up front there were a lot of excellent scores and individual performances were good with lots of running from the Rossa lads.
There is plenty still to play for the thirds with the two league games needing to be won, which would leave the Rossa top of the league but in a top two playoff for the title. The Championship semi final has also to be played.

On Saturday past the annual Patsy Monaghan Memorial Under 12 Tournament took place with teams from St Eunan’s Letterkenny, Coalisland, Bellaghy, Newbridge and Magherafelt taking part. This was an excellent tournament, with a very high standard of committed and skillful football being displayed by all teams.
The young Rossa team started slowly, going down to Coalisland by two points. However excellent victories against Newbridge and St Eunan’s meant that Magherafelt only needed to beat Bellaghy to gain a place in the final.
Unfortunately the more experienced and stronger Bellaghy team came narrowly out on top and the Rossa’s failed to make the final. Congratulations to Bellaghy on beating St Eunan’s in the final and thanks to the other teams for taking part.
Thanks also to the Monaghan family for providing the Perpetual trophy, to the three referees and many umpires, to U12 parents for providing food and catering support on the day, to Genesis Bakery for the supply of food for lunch and to everyone else who made the day such a success.
