This weekend sees the 19th Nigel Cheevers Memorial Tournament take place at Steelweld Park.

For the first time since the tournament inception a team from Wales will participate with Cardiff Hockey Club coming over.

Cardiff will be playing in the Conference West League following a brilliant season last year when they won this league. Unfortunately they missed out during the play offs for promotion to the Premier Division.

They also won a European Tournament in Vienna which gave them entry to the Euro Hockey League this season where they will take on David Ames’ Beeston.

The Welshmen see this tournament as the ideal preparation for their Euro Hockey debut next month.

Holcombe Hockey Club will play their hockey in Conference East. They have really strengthened their squad and among the new acquisitions are GB captain Barry Middleton and GB player Dan Fox.

Both are included in the squad for the Cheevers tournament. This club are really making a big playfor promotion to the Premiership and should be great to watch at Steelweld Park.

Inverleith from Scotland have been great supporters of the tournament and will be making their third consecutive appearance. They play in the Scottish Prem and see the tournament as great pre season preparation. They have a new coaching team and should be a tough team to beat.

This will be the Reds’ second big weekend having played against Southgate, Doncaster and Glasgow Western last weekend as they prepare for the new season which begins on Tuesday 10th September with an away game to Mossley as they begin the defence of the Kirk Cup.

During the weekend there will also be a Ladies Tournament taking place with teams from England and Dublin taking part. Again this is ideal preparation for Cookstown Ladies and follows on from their trip last weekend to Dublin where they played top opposition.

The club would encourage as many as possible to come to Steelweld Park to watch hockey of the highest standard. There will also be food available during Saturday from the clubhouse for supporters.
