UPPERLANDS cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel was celebrating more success last weekend as she finished second in the Individual Pursuits at the World Cup in Columbia.

Houvenaghel had settle for second place behind former world champion Alison Shanks.

The World Cup counts towards Olympic qualifying points and Houvenaghel was delighted that the British team left Cali with a maximum allocation of points.

The talented cyclist was also part of the team pursuit side which defeated the Kiwis in Columbia to win gold.

“The win over the Kiwis has given us a crucial psychological advantage as we know from recent performances that they are in good shape.”

Wendy will now return to training and prepare for her next event which takes place in the Olympic Velodrome in February.

DUP Mid Ulster MLA Ian McCrea has congratulated Wendy Houvenaghel from Upperlands on winning the gold medal with the Great Britain women’s pursuit team at the Track World Cup event in Cali Columbia by beating New Zealand in the final.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ian McCrea said:

“I would like to congratulate Wendy on another great achievement by winning gold at the Track World Cup.

“Having known Wendy from our days at school I am personally delighted at her successful career and adding another gold medal in the Team Pursuit event at the Track World Cup in Cali, Columbia to her collection is a tribute to her desire to win.”

McCrea concluded by saying that Wendy is a great ambassador for Northern Ireland and for her home town of Upperlands.

“I wish her on behalf of the people of Mid Ulster and from across the province, continued success as she continues to compete for the GB team.”
