Greer narrow Moyola winner

THREE members returned 42pts apiece in the B. McNally & Sons sponsored stableford held at Moyola Park.

It was by a better last 3 holes that Leslie Greer (15) was declared the winner, his prize being golf shoes, and the full result reads; 2nd, Stephen Hyvart (19) (on last 3 holes ), golf bag ; 3rd, Seamus McGuckin (19) ,putter ; best gross – Paul Shaw (2) 68, wedge ; handicap category –3 to 9 , David Caskey (8) 39pts , wet top ; 10 to 17, Liam Morgan (13) 39pts , wet top ; 18 plus, Ivor Reid (23) 40pts , wet top. There were 28 optional twos winners, each getting 2 golf balls, and Seamus Gribbin receives 69 balls having scored a hole in one.

There was also a close finish to the Sweep Stableford held the very next day. Result is – 1st, Eugene Donnelly (17) 42pts ; 2nd, Sean Kerr (10) 41pts (on better second nine ) ; 3rd, John Quigg jnr. (7) 41pts (on last 3 holes ); handicap cetegory –3 to 9, Patrick McGuigan (9) 40pts ; 10 to 13 , Keith Brown (11) 41pts; 14 to 17, Ben Henry (15) 40pts ; 18 plus, John Frewson (23) 39pts. Here, 18 players win 3 golf balls each for teir optional twos entry.

At the AIB Irish Amateur Open held in Royal Dublin, Moyola Park member Luke Lennox finished joint 4th with a four round total of 297. In what was a truly International field of top amateur golfers, this was just five shots off the winner, A. Dunbar from Rathmore. Luke recorded rounds of 73, 73,72 and 79, and indeed, going into that last days play, held the lead. Unfortunately, that final round of 79 was to prove decisive, but despite this, it was a teriffic performance by the young Moyola Park member.

The various team captains for 2010 at Moyola Park are ; Senior Cup – Sean McKenna ; Barton Shield – Eamon McHugh ; Junior Cup – Kieran Fields ; Jimmy Bruen – Rory Gribbin ; Pierce Purcell – Nialal Evans ; Mixed Foursomes – Brendan gates – Ulster Cup – Noel McMullan ; Ulster Fourball – Derick Munro ; Fred Daly – Jared Hammond ; and, Joe Carr – Victor Allen.

The ladies branch will hold a prizegiving in the clubhouse next Wednesday at 8pm sharp. Awards will be given for the Spring League, Betty Davidson, Peggy Nelson Qualifier, Avon Travel Trophy and Marie Curie Cancer Care. And, the Ulster Sports Trust Qualifier has been won by Ann O’Neill with a return of 39pts. Second here was Alma McCrone, 36pts.

This latest results leaves the standings in the player of the year as ; G.Kelly, 12pts ; A.O’Neill, 11pts ; A. McCrone, 9pts ; E.Totten, 8pts ; M.O’Neill, 6pts ; M.Quinn, M.McGoldrick and C.McElhennon, 5pts ;B.O’Neill, 4pts ;P.Johnston, T.McKeever and J. Evans, 3pts ; J.Alexander,M.Ferguson, and B.Slowey, 2pts ; K.McKenna, M. McSwiggan, A.Speedie and K.McGoldrick, 1pt. First through to the next round of the Watterson Cup are the pairing of Geraldine Kelly and Fionnuala Walls . The full draw for round 2 here reads – Pat Johnston and Clare McKenna or Alma McCrone and Marion Overend v Celine Gribbin and Margaret Gates ; Geraldine Kelly and Fionnuala Walls beat Ita McHugh and Phil Smyth; Marion Dempsey and Margaret Murphy v Pauline Hutchinson and Mary McSwiggan ; Una Hegarty and Christine Crockett v Molly Quinn and Bernie O’Neill; Judie Martin and Mariead Diamond v Kitty McKenna and Elieen McKaigue; Jacqueline Evans and Kathleen Craig v Sinead McMeel and Dymphna Logue; Margaret O’Neill and Ann Regan v Sheena Scullion and Marie Wilson; Ita Henry and Bridget Bradley v Bernadette Slowey and Ann Kelly. These matches must be played by 31st May.

Host member T.McKenna (25) has won a Seniors Stableford with 45pts. Second here went to C.O’Kane (17) 40pts (on better back nine), third G.O’Connell ( 14) 40pts, and fourth was N.McGurk (21) 37pts (on better back nine). There were 5 optional twos winners, each getting 7 golf balls.

The Tobermore Concrete Stableford will be held this Saturday. Play here is from white tees and the event counts towards the golfer of the year.

Sunday next brings a Sweep Stableford while the Seniors (over 50s ) Open Stableford takes place on Monday. For the ladies, their Warnock Rose Bowl and Love Cup (handicap 30-36) is next Wednesday. Entry for both is 3 with 1 for optional twos.
