Sperrin Spartans Olympic Handball Club will be facing tough opposition on Saturday October 26 at Lisburn Leisureplex as they travel to take part in their first competitive tournament.
The side, sponsored by local company Strata Ireland, face Ulster rivals Belfast, Dublin side Astra and the Irish national team. It will be a stern test for the inexperienced side as they prepare to enter the Men’s Senior League in November. Dubliners Astra are the current All-Ireland Champions, the Irish National Side have recently been in qualifying action for Euro 2014 in Denmark and the Mid-Ulster side enjoy a healthy rivalry with Belfast.
The action starts at 9.30am in Lisburn as part of a weekend of the largest handball event ever organised in N.Ireland.
According to IOHA Operations Manager Susan Moloney: “We are delighted to be able to organise this event as Lisburn is a European City of Sport for 2013 and is also the HQ for Coca Cola, a company that we have a great relationship with since winning the Thank You Fund in 2012.”
Sperrin Spartans train at Greenvale Leisure Centre, Magherafelt on Wednesdays at 8pm and are actively seeking new members. You can contact Niall on 07845 503004 or Patrick on 07947 395526, you can also contact the club on at www.facebook.com/midulsterolympichandball .
It will be the first competitive outing for the newly-formed N.Ireland women’s side.
The team are drawn from Sperrin Spartans, Belfast and Coleraine clubs and will face top quality opposition in Astra and Tallaght outfit Lughansa.
This Sunday, October 20, sees a Talent ID session for the Irish women’s under 18 squad at Tallaght Sportsplex, Tallaght.
It is being used to identify talented girls born in 1996/97 who haven’t played the game before.
Handball has a lot of transferable skills from other sports such as basketball, rugby, GAA and it’s an opportunity to play at the Partille Cup in Sweden next summer.
