Rainey reach quarters

McDowell Cup

Rainey ES II 2 Dalraida II 1

Congratulations to the Rainey 2nd XI who have made it through to the quarterfinals of the McDowell Cup after a very tough match.

It was an exciting beginning with end to end action. Unfortunately, the Rainey girls conceded a penalty corner with the Rainey failing to clear the rebound found themselves 1-0 down after 14 minutes. It really made the Rainey girls step up their game and just couldn’t convert a number of corners before half time.

After a team talk the girls knew what they had to do and from the first whistle Rainey where in Dalraida’s circle and had won a penalty corner. Under a minute in and Captain Nicole Ferguson swept the ball into the backboard to take the game to 1-1.

Rainey stepped up their game and persisted down both the right and left channels with the midfield of Niamh Scullion, Zara Bell and Diane Forsythe working tremendously hard.

The forwards Emma McClure and Olivia Menary put the Dalraida’s defence under immense pressure but just couldn’t find another goal.

Dalraida to had their opportunities but with a strong defence of Jayne Sargent, Aimee Stockman, Edele Mallon and Sarah Caulfield they could not find a way through.

Rebecca Allen in nets was certainly put to the test but calmly made two vital saves. Niara Walls and Rachel Stewart made an impact coming onto the pitch and the fresh legs certainly helped.

Olivia Menary and Nicole Ferguson really showed how much this match meant to them and with endless running Nicole was rewarded with a second goal just four minutes from time. Rainey, excited and nervous, held onto the ball and tried to prevent Dalraida from having any goal scoring opportunities.

The final whistle went and a great sense of achievement was had after a tough match beating Ballymena Academy in the league on Saturday they had made it down to the last eight of the Ulster Schools McDowell on Monday.
