HOCKEY: Another first for Foyle Hockey Club

THERE was yet another first for Foyle Hockey Club as Saturday saw the first friendly U12 boys match.

FHC played host to Castlederg Junior boys and girls who had one previous match under their belt recently. Weather was excellent for such a fun day of sport at St Columb's Park.

The format was two periods of 15 minutes of 7-a-side followed by a further 15 minutes of 11-a-side with rolling subs.

The more experienced team prevailed to win 5-0 with one goal dubiously disallowed for the boys. Jason Nolan was just one of many young talents who displayed great promise and midfield qualities.

Foyle coach Z Bhali commented: "I was amazed to see the hockey talent and rapid learning abilities of kids in this Foyle region. Just few months ago when we started teaching kids they had absolutely no idea about hockey but here they are making their way through the opponent's defence.

"I think future of hockey is very bright now and with a little bit of support, training and hard work I am sure kids in northwest will be able to compete at many levels and may bring silverwear home in future school and club games, maybe even gold at the olympics."
