JUJITSU: Maghera Jujitsu Club hold grading

SATURDAY 27 June saw the second grading held by the newly formed Maghera Jujitsu Club. Children and adults from 5-45 years old graded to attain new belts on what was a significant event.

No less than 35 children and 16 adults took part. Students demonstrated their abilities and technical knowledge by executing locks, throws and take downs. Examiner on the day Sensei Peter Kernohan commented "the standard in Maghera club is outstanding, especially for such a new club. It is a credit to the students and coaches alike."

Club coach Paul Creighton added "Jujitsu is a fun activity for children from 5 years of age. They are taught the basics of self defence, discipline and respect.

"Improved fitness and exercise is a useful by-product of jujitsu especially in today's society where TV and video games seem to take precedence over playing out doors. For the adults, it is all about improving confidence, fitness, flexibility, strength and learning the secrets to successful street self defence."

Assistant coach Maria added: "We now have several female students who attend the adult classes, and we would like to encourage more to come along.

"We have a female coach to hand for most classes and like to tailor ladies training on self defence against a potential male attacker. We are keen to enrol new members over the next 4-6 weeks, so come along and bring a friend to find out more".

Paul would like to thank all who assist in the running of the club, and his own instructor and coach Jim Canning who runs Magherafelt Jujitsu Club.
