Karen goes swimming with the big fish
Karen Alexander crossed the Irish Sea to see how she faired against the big fish in the British Intercounties Championships. This fell race attracts the best female fell runners from all across the UK and as expected Karen did us proud. The Lletty Fell Race (Wales) is also part of the UKA mountain running challenge and has a total climb of 2900 feet over 9 miles. The hot weather was not isolated to the North of Ireland over the past weekend, the Welsh Hills also got a scorching. Kare
Ballymena Ecos 5m
The blistering heat over the weekend didn’t put off the Sperrin Harrier Athletes and the other 250 participants from taking part in the Ecos 5m Road Race. With the road tar bubbling under their feet two of the clubs long standing and most decorated runners where placed in their age group categories. Raymond Ferguson who is not long back since completing the London Marathon was placed 3rd in this over 50’s category and Irwin Speirs was placed 1st in the over 60’s category. The Sperrin Harrier Results are as follows: Allen Shaw 31.34, Raymond Ferguson 32.15, Ashley Crawford 32.44, Irwin Speirs 32.50, Davy O’Brien 33.27, Toney O’Neill 36.15. Congratulations to you all and hope you had sunscreen on!
Edinburgh Marathon
Our own Francis Stewart completed the Edinburgh Marathon in the hottest four hours of last Sunday. The race started at 10am which meant that Francis was running during the four hottest hours of the day and the water stations every three miles didn’t help much as the water was warm. Francis said that when he saw so many runners collapsing around him he dropped his pace and stop racing and concentrated on completing. Well done Francis for undertaking the Marathon on such a warm day, it will be an experience you will never forget.
Bush 100.
The next race in the Sperrin Harriers Summer League calendar (for which we are still awaiting confirmation from the organisers) is a 10K road race on the Bush 100 course on Thursday 10/06/10 at 7pm. This is the first time the Sperrin Harriers have been invited by the organisers of the Bush 100 to run this course and we would hope to see a large turn out. Please log onto the Sperrin Harriers website for full details on the Summer League and to download the flyer.
