Cookstown Ladies 1 Victorians 1
COOKSTOWN went into Saturday’s game with Victorians knowing that they were up against it having been defeated by the Belfast club just two weeks before.
With several key players missing, the task for the Coolnafranky side was even more difficult, but the Reds’ mettle shone through and they came away with a much deserved draw.
Victorians started the faster of the two teams, putting the Cookstown defence under some immense pressure, with R. Smyth and G. Brown remaining solid and clearing the circle on numerous occasions to relieve the pressure.
However, the Victorians forward line eventually found a crack in the Cookstown defence and scrambled the ball into the back of the net, to put them one goal ahead. This was the wake up call the home side needed, remaining optimistic and starting to create some promising attacking play through the midfield of R. Brown, L. Gillespie and J. Richardson, linking up well with the forward line of L. Johnston, L. McAleece and R. Stewart.
Cookstown came out in the second half, maintaining the same pressure they ended the first half with and looked by far the most threatening side. They were delighted to welcome back E. Walker, who’s work ethic paid off and along with L. Johnston, won Cookstown numerous short corners.
Cookstown’s third set piece, through L. Gillespie and E. Carson, found G. Brown at the post to nicely convert for the deserved equalizer. Soon after, Cookstown were unfortunate not to take the lead, when R. Stewart was unlucky not to come out on top of a one on one with an approaching Victorians goalkeeper.
Other chances just fell wide of the post by L. Johnston and R. Brown. Victorians created some chances and corners at the other end, but failed to take any chances through some super saves by K. Hodgett in the Cookstown goal.
This is a great result for the Ladies, who need to continue on a positive streak for survival in Senior One.
