COOKSTOWN headed off to the seaside at the weekend to play Bangor 2nd XI with the bare 11 players and some 3rd XI debutants for the 2011-2012 season.

But everyone on that eleven played with a real red army fire and this proved to be the inspiration that lead Cookstown to a superb win over the Seasiders.

The game started at a fierce pace with both teams wanting to attack. After about 10 minutes Cookstown found themselves a goal down to a well worked Bangor goal. Immediately after this Cookstown switched on with youthful midfield of Rooney, Smyth and Donaldson combining well with linked balls from defence.

With Cookstowns third or fourth entry into the ‘D’ Matty Mo found the target with a sweet strike on the reverse followed quickly by a McGaw stroke that he had won from a short corner strike hitting Bangor feet on the line.

Despite piling on the pressure Bangor sneaked up the other end to draw the sides level before half time. With a firm chat at half time from Captain McGaw and Lepe and Millar (The old heads) , it was decided that if Cookstown got an early second half goal then the game was there for the winning.

However, Bangor grabbed a goal just after the break.

After this the Cookstown defence turned it on with Lepe, Millar, Thom, and “the Major” at the heart of the Reds revival.

With ten minutes to go Cookstowns defence linked well with forward Stewart who won a resulting Long corner, Mark Rooney played the corner ball to McGaw who dinked the ball over two defenders then cheekily played a one - two off the keepers pads to create an angle to roll the ball home. The sides were now level at 3-3.

With a few minutes left on the clock Matty Mo received a pass from midfield and powered into the D. With Support on hand Mo decided to go it alone and thundered home a memorable winning goal for the Reds. 4-3 to the Reds

Tremendous performance by the team and perfect result. MOTM - Gary Major (for a game winning tackle late on in the match and a very solid performance)

Team: Henry, Hagan, Millar, Major, Thom, Smyth, Rooney, Donaldson, Stewart, Montgomery, McGaw

The 3rd XI team would like to send a massive get well soon message to Maverick after his horror injury last weekend in the EHL.
