Cookstown’s Andrew Elliott crowned Mid-Ulster BB table-tennis champion

The 46th Annual Mid-Ulster Battalion Boys’ Brigade table tennis championships were held in the McNeece Halls, Stewartstown, on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th November 2012.

The tournament was sponsored by Mr and Mrs Mervyn Gregg, Aughrim 24 Hour Self Service Filling Station, Castledawson.

Over 100 players from the following companies took part: 1st Armagh, 1st Aughnacloy & Ballymagrane, 1st Bellaghy, 1st Caledon, 1st Castlecaulfield, 1st Castledawson, 1st Cookstown, 1st Culnady, 1st Dungannon, 1st Magherafelt, 1st Moneymore, 1st Moy and 1st Stewartstown.

The tournament officials were Walter Mullan, Stephen Charles, James Glendinning, Anne Houston and Maxi Trimble. Seven tables on loan from Brigh Table Tennis Club, Stewartstown Table Tennis Club and 1st Stewartstown BB were in use.

The Under 12 competition was held on the Wednesday night and after the opening prayer by Mr Roy Marshall (1st Castlecaulfield), keen competitive play provided a final between Ben Barefoot and Callum Scott with Scott triumphing by 3-0.

In the U12 Consolation section B Harry Evans of 1st Magherafelt defeated Aiden McDonald by 3-0.

The U14 section was also held on the Wednesday night Andrew Hawe of 1st Castledawson won 3-1 against Steven Monaghan of 1st Caledon.

In the consolation section, Sam Hardy of 1st Moneymore won with victory over Cameron Martin of 1st Caledon.

Mr Alastair Scott, Cookstown, (former U14 and senior competition winner) presented the winners and runners-up with the Jim Thornberry Cup and Gregg trophies. An enjoyable night’s fun came to a close with the benediction by Mr Robert Park (1st Cookstown).

The senior section was held on the Thursday night. Play got underway after the opening prayer by Mr. Norman McMullan (1st Castledawson).

Andrew Elliott of 1st Cookstown eventually came out on top with a 3-1 win over John Stewart of 1st Castledawson in the final

In the consolation final, Andrew Conway of 1st Culnady defeated James Cousley of 1st Moneymore.

Mr David Cupples (1st Caledon) presented the Walter Mullan Cup and Gregg trophies to the winners and runners-up. Mr Robert Park proposed a vote of thanks to Table Tennis clubs for the use of their equipment, Norman Devlin for the address system, James Glendinning for transport, 1st Stewartstown Presbyterian Church for the use of the halls, Mr Stanley Junk for his caretaking duties, all those who acted as officials and umpires, those who took photographs and all the players for coming to make the event such a success. Mention was also made of the generous sponsorship for the event through the kind actions of Mr and Mrs Mervyn Gregg, proprietors of Aughrim 24 Hour Self Service Filling Station. Mr Maxi Trimble (1st Castlecaulfield) brought the tournament to a close for another year with the Benediction.
