Midget Gems win Garvin Cup

Midget Gems 0 Castledawson Strollers 0

(Midget Gems won 3-2 on penalties)

AFTER an exciting week the Garvin Cup Final took place at Mill Park on Saturday afternoon. While there was a number of nail-biting games throughout the tournament it was the final moments of the final that produced the most amazing finish ever seen at a Garvin Cup Final.

With the final ending scoreless the game went straight to penalties. Midget Gems missed their first two penalties while Castledawson Strollers scored theirs.

Midget Gems proceeded to miss their third leaving Castledawson needing only to score one of their last three penalties to win the cup.

As the Castledawson players and supporters were preparing to celebrate, Midget Gems goalkeeper had other ideas, and what followed had to be seen to be believed.

“Yorkie” pulled off three world class saves and with his team mates converting their last two penalties the shootout went to sudden death. Midget Gems scored to go into the lead for the first time. Now it was down to “Yorkie” to win the game for them by saving his fourth penalty in a row.

With the Mill Meadow deadly silent the Castledawson keeper ran forward and hit a fierce shot only to see the “Giant Gem Yorkie” make another magnificent save and win the Garvin Cup for the Midget Gems.

The cup was presented to the winning captain Brian Martin by Sydney McCelland.

The Moyola Park officials would like to thank all the teams that took part, ONE1918 for sponsoring the medals, the match officials Ian McCulloch, Raymond Bigger and Kenny Bigger, Bob Fullerton for looking after the changing rooms and finally the people who came along to support the competition. See you all again next time.
