Magherafelt Council hosted a Civic Reception for Patsy Forbes in the Council Offices on Thursday.

This reception was to honour Patsy’s victories in the N. Irish, Irish and UK 100m and 200m Masters’ Championship, the UK Indoor 60m and 200m Championship, and on winning three silver medals in the World Master Games in the 70-74 age category.

In her address, the Chairperson, Councillor Catherine Elattar, stated that Patsy is a popular figure, not only in sporting circles, but also in the business arena.

She also spoke of Patsy’s achievements which were an inspiration to the younger members of the athletics club and, as a direct result of his success, the membership of the master’s section.

The Chairperson recalled the honour of Patsy being asked to carry the Olympic Torch on one relay as it made its way across N. Ireland. She said that she was sure that this was something that he would never forget.

She also paid tribute to Patsy’s wife and family, his running partner Dessie Ryan, and Barry Holmes of the Mid-Ulster Athletics Club whom she said had done son much for promoting athletics in the District.

In conclusion, she wished him many long years of enjoyment in the athletics world.
