IT proved a night of celebration last Sunday for all concerned at Moyola Park Golf Club in Castledawson, when member Chris Selfridge landed the Irish Amateur Close Championship at Royal Portrush.
The 20-year-old has just returned from his golf scholarship at the University of Toledo in America , and fired rounds of 66, 72,70 and 75 for a total of 283.
This was two shots ahead of the runner up, Reeve Whitson from Mourne, as the Castledawson golfer secured the prestigious old trophy in great style.
Indeed, Chris now joins a list of previous winners such as Graeme McDowell,Darren Clarke and Rory McILroy - illustrious company that will see the Moyola players name now also inscribed on the cup.
Going into the last days play, Chris held a fine four shot lead, which he increased to six after just six holes played. However, the Royal Portrush course is tough one and soon, the advantage was down to just three over the fast closing Whitson.
Birdies gained at the 9th and 10th holes were to prove pivotal and Selfridge coasted home for a two shot win amidst rapturous applause from many followers at Moyola Park who had travelled to offer support.
This latest win comes on the back of being awarded Toledo Rockets Freshman of The Year while all at the Castledawson club celebrated the success. Chris Selfridge has come through the junior ranks here with honour after honour at all levels to date. Congratulations goes to the new Irish Amateur Champion from all at Moyola Park Golf Club!
