Dermot is clear Moyola winner

BY five clear points, 28 handicapper Dermot Lyons won the Saturday Sweep Stableford held at Moyola Park Golf Club, Castledawson.

His return was 47pts, with J.B.McLoughlin (16) second 42pts,third Gerard Mulligan (23) 41pts, fourth Brian O’Boyle (10) 40pts (on better back nine ), fifth Karl Kelso (21) 40pts (on last 6 holes) and in sixth place, Kevin Conway (14) 40pts (on better back nine). There were 21 optional twos winners, each receiving 4 golf balls. On Sunday, Tom O’Kane (11) was successful in a similar competition with 45pts.

Second went to Alastair Gilmore (14) 42pts (on better back nine) and third Kevin McAuley (12) 42pts. On this occasion, 8 members win 4 golf balls apiece for optional twos entry.

Anne O’Neill has won the Four Seasons sponsored Sweep Stableford . Her score of 35pts was matched by the runner up, Grainne McLean, a countback eventually deciding the outcome.This result leaves the golfer of the year table as – Anne O’Neill, 11pts;Mairead Diamond, 9pts; Bridget Bradley and Sinead McMeel, 6pts ; Grainne McLean and Marie Wilson, 5pts ; Molly Quinn, 4pts;Jacqueline Evans,Kitty McKenna and Eileen McKeague, 3pts; Phil Smith ,Ita McHugh and Sally Coyle, 2pts ; Margaret Gates and Pat Johnston, 1pt.

Congratulations to team captain Margaret Gates and her players who defeated Slieve Russell at home in the first round of the Minor Cup.Also, well done to captain Margaret,Mary and Sinead who are through to the 3rd round of the Irish mail Foursomes after convincing wins over Greenacres and Ballycastle.

In other annual Inter Club Championships, the Moyola ladies have received the following draws; Junior Cup - versus Ballycastle away then home ; Intermediate Cup - versus Strabane home then away; Challenge Cup – versus Bushfoot away then home; Junior Cup Foursomes – bye. All of these matches must be completed by May 7.

Meanwhile, the draw has been made for the Watterson Cup matchplay competition. The preliminary round reads - Geraldine Kelly/ Marie Leadon v Ann Regan/ Marian Dempsey; Teresa McKeever / Claire McKenna v Ita McHugh /Kitty McKenna; Jackie Evans / Kathleen Craig v Mairead Diamond/ Dympna Logue ; Marie Wilson/ Rita Harkin v Mary McSwiggan /Phil Smith; Eileen McKeague/ Pat Johnston v Sinead McMeel/ Judy Martin; Bernie O’Neill/ Bernadette Slowey v Pauline Hutchinson? Alma McCrone. These matches must be played by Wednesday, April 25.

Monday continues the Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords while the ladies will play in the Peggy Nelson Trophy (Qualifier) Stableford next Wednesday, May 2. There are three handicap sections here, these being ; A – 15 and under; B – 16 to 24; C – 25 to 36.The final will be at Dunmurry Golf Club on Monday July 23, entry here is £3 and £1 for optional twos while a timesheet is available in the pro shop.

Also, the ladies branch hope to run a monthly 18 Hole Sweep on Saturdays for a trial basis this year. Tee off is 3pm to 3.15pm and these cards will qualify for Lady Captains Day but not count towards player of the year points. A maximum of 24 places will be available on each day, and in order to retain this slot,at least 12 players are needed. You may go out in eight three balls or six four balls and anyone interested, should sign the sheet posted on the noticeboard.

Anyone wishing to be considered for selection on the Pierce Purcell team, should enter name,partners name and contact details on the sheet now provided in the clubhouse.

Handicaps should be no lower than 12 last year and a minimum combined handicap of 27.The team captain here is Mickey Gormley. Those using the Moyola Park course, should take extra care at present as there are a number of drain laying projects ongoing. In the semi-finals of the snooker pairs competition, M.Craig / G.McOscar will play L.Campbell/ C.Toner while L.O’Neill/ Skelly take on F.Cushley/S.McGuckin.

In the weekly Club Lotto, the £25 winner for April 15 should have read Niall McGoldrick. Club Lotto draw numbers for Sunday April 22 are – 4,14,17 and 21. The £25 winners are – Dr Josef Kuriacose and Paul Kelly. Jackpot was not won and now stands at £900. Next draw this Sunday.
