A MAGHERAFELT schoolboy is making a name for himself in the go-karting world.

Fourteen-year-old Gary Donnelly, from Ardboe, is aiming to win the Motor Sport Ireland Championship which would qualify for him the World final in Portgual.

The St Pius College pupil must do well in the next two rounds of the competition at Cork and Galway next month to remain in contention.

But he has been setting local circuits ‘on fire’ during his three years in karting.

Over the weekend he won the Irish Kart Grand Prix Championship in great style, adding it to his other titles in the 12-16 years category.

Dad Des says his son has a great passion for motor sport and hopes to progress to racing cars.

“He has two big races in September to win to reach the World final,” explained Des. “It won’t be easy, but he has the determination to go all the way.”
