Three top ten placings in three stages of the Tour of Ulster reinforced how adeptly East Tyrone’s Gary Jeffers has made the step up to become one of the country’s top elite riders.
The twenty three-year-old rode with the best throughout to finish 19th overall in the prestigous three day event promoted by the CarnWheelers Club. Tenth on Stage One was followed by a brilliant third place in the short Time Trial at Maghera which moved him to ninth overall.
Sunday’s decisive stage in County Armagh saw the race fragment into several groups with Gary finishing 28th at 8.06. However fifth place in the final 90 mile stage which started and finished back at Maghera was an incredible effort in his first Stage Race as an A1 rider.
East Tyrone’s other team member Stephen Hutchinson also rode consistently throughout and finished what was a hard race. The 350 mile event was won overall by the current Irish Veterans Road Race Champion Joe Fenlon (Aquablue Racing Team).
Meanwhile East Tyrone’s youth members Ellie and Neil Kelso were in action in Round 2 of the X/C Series at Rostrevor. Ellie placed second in the U12 Girls Event with Neil finishing sixth in the U10 Boys Race. Richard Archer, Leslie Mitchell and Keith Warwick were all in action in the Senior Event.
Racing continues this Thursday on the Omagh Road with Round Four of the Cooper Motorcycles Time Trial League which is a ten mile event starting at Kildress Plumbing Supplies at 7.30pm sharp.
