MID ULSTER travelled to play Oriel in the 2nd round of this season’s plate competition and upset the odds coming away with a 14 shot win.
This was an excellent performance from the ladies which now sets up a home semi final clash with close neighbours South Tyrone on 21 January.
In the first half, Kathleen McKenna’s rink with M Lagan, A Barnes and A McEldowney got the Mid Ulster side off to a flier with a stunning 17 – 1 win over G Roullier. After losing the 1st end to a single the rink never looked back and totally outclassed their opponents. The rink of D Young, D McHugh, O Kyle and M Paul were unfortunate to go down 11 – 7. Luck did not always go with them but they stuck to the task and kept the margin to just 4 shots.
On mat 3, M Rocks, M McIvor, E Slaine and M Carson had a tight struggle with B Cunningham’s rink and were unlucky to lose on the last end.
The game was all square after 5 ends and going into the final end the Mid Ulster rink led 8 – 7 but a two on the last end for Oriel left them 9 – 8 down.
At the interval Mid Ulster led by 11 shots. Oriel were confident that their second half rinks could pull back the deficit but while it did get down to 4 shots at one stage they were never able to forge ahead.
On mat 1, S Anderson, T McKenna, J Pitts and M Martin had a difficult time for the first 6 ends by which stage they were 9 – 1 down and it looked as if the home side would be able to turn over the 11 shot deficit.
However, the Mid Ulster rink had three good ends picking up 7 shots against one of the top Oriel skips and indeed but for the opposing skip the Mid Ulster rink might have picked up more.
Going into the last end Oriel led 9 – 8 and with the other two rinks up it was more a matter of not conceding a big count than worrying about winning. Oriel picked up a single to win 10 – 8. On mat 2, E Wright, G Simms, H Greer and A Mawhinney making her inter zone debut had a tight struggle against the classy I Hanratty. Nothing separated the two rinks for the first 8 ends with the scores tied at 5 – 5 though both rinks had opportunities to open up a gap.
Singles on the last two ends saw the Mid Ulster rink home by 7 – 5. On mat 3, B Davidson, M Davidson, J Bowman and I Colvin had a close game with C McMahon with the scores tied at 7 all after 7 ends thanks to a very fortunate 2 scored by the Oriel rink. Mid Ulster picked up 4 shots to 1 over the last three ends to finish 11 – 8 up and 58 – 44 overall.
