LAST Saturday morning 26 of the Sperrin Harrier club made their presence felt at the annual Larne Half Marathon.
More than 1300 athletes were streaming down the sea front and what a sight it was to see the runners coming over the hill and heading for the town centre.
By the time they got back on to the coast road and the 2 mile mark Joe McAlister of St Malachy’s was already pulling away with Connor Magill N.B.H. Brendan Teer East Down, Richard Turkington Armagh, Francis Marsh North Down, and Stephen McGrory Annadale making up the top six.
Sperrin Harriers leading runner was Aaron Meharg with David O’Brien then Francis Stewart, Rodney Young, Darren Church running together and Mark Reid not far behind them Sperrin’s leading Ladies where Tanya Black, Fiona Crozier, and Joanne Bell.
And as they reached the half way mark there was no change but by seven miles David had begun to struggle badly and Francis, Rodney,Darren were now well clear of him with Mark and Trevor Dallas coming through the field nicely.

Magherafelt 5 Mile Classic
There is now just over two weeks to go to the second running of the Magherafelt 5 Mile Classic which again is being sponsored by Sportique Broad Street, Magherafelt.
The race will again be based at the Meadowbank Sports Arena with registration starting at 10am with the race setting off at 12-00 sharp from the Rainey Rugby Club,

Athletes of all abilities are more than welcome so get the trainers out and lets get running. Who will be the Harriers to watch for a win in the there are a few contenders Glenn Donnelly, Christopher McPeake, Aaron Meharg, Donal Gallagher, Damian Galvin hopefully will all be running on the day while in the Vets Mel Hughes, Dermot McEllhinney, Alan Shaw, Trevor Dallas,Tommy Harraghy,Kevin Murphy, Alvin Taylor, Irwin Speirs, While in the Ladies Karen Alexander could be a local winner also Tanya Black, Natasha Henry, Fiona Crozier, Joanne Bell, Bernie McNally will all be looking for a podium finish.
Dunboyne 4 Miles
The Harriers had two athletes competing in the annual Dunboyne 4 mile road race Christopher McPeake made his way to the Co Meath venue and was joined by our Dublin-based athlete John Quinn who is from Cookstown.
This race has always been one of the top races in Ireland going back over 30 years, Christopher had a great run to finish in a time of 21-05 with John crossing the line in 23-25. Well done lads.
Omagh Half Marathon
Next Saturday sees the annual running of the Omagh Half Marathon and this race has always been a big favorite with the club and, hopefully, the Harriers will be there in force again and will picking up a few prizes.
Marathon & Ultra
Next Sunday four of the Sperrin’s finest will head for wilds of Connemara, where Gary McGuckin, Marty McGirr and
Darren Crozier will be competing in the Marathon while Oliver Murphy will tackle the Ultra they have all put in a lot of hard work and we hope it all pays off on the day.
Stunnerz in Runnerz
