Moyola anglers benefit charity

A TOTAL of £600 was raised when Moyola Angling Club held their annual charity competitions.This amount will go to Cancer Research UK and Downs Syndrome Assocation. On the day, there were 22 senior and nine juniors taking part and all who turned out, thoroughly enjoyed the fishing also excellent barbecue afterwards.

Winner of the Francis McAuley Memorial Junior Cup was Ethan Steele,who happened to be the first name on this trophy last year, and is now the second on it as well ! The seniors cup was won by Philip Maguire,second Gareth Glendinning and in third Wesley McClenaghan.

There were donations from NBT Haulage and Garage Services (Cookstown), Stanley Aspinall (Cookstown),Huestons Tackle Shop (Castledawson), Crawfords Tackle Shop (Maghera), Gortgill Service Station ( Moneyglass),Henry James Walls and Mervyn Finlay.A big thanks goes to Ashling and Danny from The Chippy in Castledawson for supplying the food and to Paul Martin from Newbridge Stores for giving the soft drinks for the barbecue, which took place after the competition. Also, gratitude to Philip Maguire for all his hard work in cooking the food.

Indeed, thanks goes to everyone for their support on the day.The league leader board now has Barry Diamond on 105pts, Philip Maguire 90pts,Tommy McGrath 87pts,Brian Bigmore 66pts and Patsy Harkin 64pts.

A date to note is that of Saturday September 29 when the Moyola club will hold their annual open day at Tobermore Ponds.The pond will be open from 11am to 1pm with a one hour break when there will be a display by World Of Owls.

This proved a fantastic and educational event when held previous.A duck race will also be held before the lake opens again to give the remaining children a chance of landing their first trout.Cost per child is £2 and they may keep one fish each.Please feel free to bring along your own rod, but do not worry if you do not have one as the club will supply equipment along with worms.It is pointed out that sweetcorn and powerbait will not be allowed.As in previous years, each child must be accompanied by an adult.The ponds are now closed to all club members until Monday October 1.

And, an open competition will take place on Sunday 30th September when admission is £10 .Legal methods include fly fishing,spinning and worms.The competition secretary will explain the rules beforehand, and his decision is final.

Next club competition is for the Harold Hueston Cup on Saturday 1st September.All those taking part should meet at the Moyola Bridge,Castledawson, for a 10.30am start.
