A great crowd of walkers turned up despite the challenging weather with 120 people taking part in a very successful hill walking weekend in the Sperrins. The First Sperrintrek of 2012 took place on the 28th & 29th of January organised by Cookstown Tourist Information Centre in association with Mid Ulster Walking Club.
On Saturday two groups started from the quiet village of Moneyneany with an upward road walk grading into mountain tracks as they made their way west to the summits of Crockmore and Crockbrack mountains, two of the most splendid viewpoints the Sperrins has to offer. At this point the two groups separated with the B group taking a downward mountain track back to Moneyneaney, while the A group continued to climb both Spelhoagh and Oughtmore mountains before finishing at the foot of Albritain Forest
Comment from Martin McGuckin, who completed Saturdays walk.
“I was one of the almost seventy walkers who set out from the Burnavon this morning. I am a novice walker and managed to complete path ‘A’. Great day out in the Sperrins in the company of caring and knowledgeable guides. We trudged our way through quite deep snow on the higher ground and on over a 10 mile route, the camaraderie amongst the walkers was tangible. Congratulations everyone involved at Cookstown Council, the Guides and Nigel the bus driver in providing a very polished organised Trek in the beautiful Sperrins!! Looking forward to joining you all in the future.”
On Sunday the Sperrintrekers started high in the Eastern Sperrins in the splendour of the first summit of the day, Collnasillagh mountain, then following the fence-line east onto Bohilbreaga mountain, the highest point of the days walk. A short stop later towards Glenshane mountain to view the beautiful Glendoo burn with its wonderful waterfall. Then they walked onto Corick, the last mountain of the day. From here the walk continue to follow the track down through Glenshane Forest to finish at Shaskin Bridge.
A big thank you to all who participated in last weekend’s walking festival. The Next Sperrintrek will take place at the end of September 2012 we hope to see you there!
