FORMER Maghera man Tommy Hughes had an outstanding run in the Virgin London Marathon when he recorded a time of 2hrs 29mins 55secs to finish 1st M50 and 54th overall.
The 52-year-old runs for Leicester Coritanian Athletic Club and competed in the marathon for the Republic of Ireland at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Hughes found the early pace uneven as he attempted to make up time after trying to clear the congestion in the early stages of the race.
By six miles he had settled down and he was on the pace until 20 miles when the wind came into play, however he cracked on to record a truly magnificent time.
Hughes is now expected to compete in the Belfast Marathon on May 7.
