Moyola success for Allen

WITH a score of 42pts, eleven handicapper William Allen secured first prize in the Tobermore Concrete Sponsored Stableford held at the Moyola Park Course in Castledawson.

A close second was Eugene Donaghy (16) 41pts, on a better second nine from Michael Murphy (13), also 41pts. Best gross once again came from Chris Selfridge (-2) with a 69, while the handicap category winners were ; -3 to 9, Richard Kirk (7) 40pts (on better second nine ) ; 10 to 13, Sean Kerr 910) 40pts ; 14 to 17, Joe McCloskey (15) 40pts; 18 plus, Darren O’Hearn (18) 37pts (on last 6 holes). There were 18 optional twos winners, each getting 6 golf balls.

Next day brought a Sweep Stableford and success for Michael O’Neill (19) 42pts. Runner up was Gary Atkinson (11) 41pts (on better second nine), and third went to Seamus J.McGuckin (11) 41pts. Best gross came from Mark Hammond (-1) with 69, and the category winners here were ; -3 to 9, Kevin Carmichael (6) 39pts ; 10 to 13, John McCloskey (13) 39pts (on better back nine ) ; 14 to 17, Darren Hutchinson (15) 39pts ; 18 plus, Cathal Griffin (18) 40pts . There were 15 optional twos winners, each receiving 2 golf balls while William Allen recorded a hole in one for 33 balls.

Winner of the PGA Tankard Qualifier held by the ladies branch, is Sinead McMeel with an excellent return of 66. In second place was C.Crockett, 70, and the optional twos winners were Pat Johnston and Jacqueline Evans.This latest results leaves the standings in the player of the year as ; G.Kelly, 15pts; M.Quinn, 13pts ; A.O’Neill, 11pts ;A. These matches must be played by June 30. Meanwhile, congratulations to the Challenge Cup team who defeated Balmoral at Castlehume. The 3rd round of this competition will be held on June 21. And, anyone wishing to play in Pat Johnstons Lady Captains Day, should enter their name and handicap on the sheet provided. Closing date is Monday 21st June at 6pm, draw to be made on the next day.

This Friday sees the Bellaghy Wolfe Tones GAC Golf Classic, in co-operation with Specialist Joinery Group, hosted at the Moyola Park course. Saturday brings the Outdoor Services Stableford, off white tees, and Sunday the Gribbin & McElhone Cup Stableford, from yellow tees. Monday continues the Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords, while the ladies branch host their O2 Perpetual Trophy Draw and Golden Girls (over 60s) Stablefords next Wednesday. Entry for each of the latter competitions is 3 with 1 for optional twos.

Also, Cookstown and Magherafelt Lions Club will be holding their annual charity barbecue and competition at Moyola on Friday, June 11. All proceeds will go to MacMillan Cancer Support with entry being 20 per golfer and 15 for the barbecue and dance afterwards.
