Cookstown sizzle at Brookgreen
Brookgreen (60) 1 Cookstown (90) 6
COOKSTOWN travelled to Brookgreen hoping to keep up their fine run of form, Brookgreen can on their day be a very dangerous opponent on their on green.
On rink 1 the Cookstown rink of Sean Quinn, Derek Mitchell, Keith Wright and Robert Aspenial faced the Brookgreen rink skipped by J Moore. With Liam McHugh on holidays Sean Quinn moved up to skip this rink and produced a brilliant performance which showed great leadership and motivation to his fellow players in his rink.
Brookgreen rarely threatened in this game and any time they were in a position to lift a count of shots, Quinn and Mitchell turned the head around in Cookstowns favour. With Aspenial and Wright adding to Brookgreens misery Cookstown sailed over the line 23-16 victors.
On rink 2 Cookstowns Damien McElroy, Gary Scott, Brian Thom and Chris McKnight came up against the Brookgreen Rink skipped by Alister Calvin. Cookstown raced into a 8-3 lead after 7 ends and were competing strongly in every head. Though Brookgreen lifted 7 shots in 2 ends and confidence in their rink soared.
This game was nip and tuck and going into the 21st end the score was 17-17. Chris McKnight drew 2 good bowls to leave Cookstown in a good position. This followed by Scott adding another fine bowl to leave Cookstown lying 3 with only the skips left to throw.
Calvin played his first bowl for Brookgreen with good weight and got a slight wick off a stray bowl which left him lying shot. McElroy then played his first bowl and narrowly missed the shot bowl of Brookgreen. Calvin then drew short with his last which left MElroy another chance to win the match. Damien played a bowl which seemed certain to take out Brookgreens bowl, only to fine a gap no wider than a bowl itself which left Brookgreen 18-17 winners.
On rink 3 Cookstowns Mark Wilson, Philip Wallace, William Lennox and Andrew Elliot took on Brookgreen’s Davy Gaille. Mark and his rink lead from start to finish in this match. With super sub Andy Elliot drafted in he didn’t disappoint with some great leading bowls. And with ever reliable William Lennox playing superb, Wallace and Wilson just kept adding bowls into the heads and played the big bowls when called upon. Good rink performance by all with Cookstown winning 23-14
On rink 4 Cookstown stalwart Colin Hogg and his rink off Noel Glasgow, Thomas Allen and Ashley Wright came up against Brookgreen’s best skip Ian Ross. With Sean Quinn having to skip Liam’s rink, Noel Glasgow stepped up to 3rd in Hoggs rink. Though Allen and Wright made the headlines with a brilliant front end play which left Ross and co clutching at straws. Hogg and co romped home 27-12.
