Crucial tie for jaded Old Boys
AFTER ten games, South Tipperary newcomers Cashel and Banbridge occupy the automatic promotion places in Division 2 B of the AIL and do not look like slipping up. Barnhall, Rainey Old Boys and Highfield, from Cork, head the pack eyeing the play-off spot.
The Match of the Day on Saturday is the tussle between Highfield and Rainey at Woodleigh Park.
Highfield, named after the district in which they were formerly based, now play in the western suburbs of the city. Relegated from Division 2 last season, they have risen quietly under the radar into a challenging position, having already played the top three clubs earlier in the campaign.
Unbeaten in the league since October, ’The Field’ are only one point behind Rainey and are sure to be firing on all cylinders for this game. Rainey are happy to be in the mix at this stage of the season, but realize that they will have to improve on recent performances if they are to maintain their challenge.
Rainey have saw their title challenge fall by the way side with some inconsistent performances over the last few months. In their most recent All Ireland tussle the Old Boys were held to a 15-15 draw with Armagh.
The previous weekend they were defeated by a rampant Connemara at Hatrick Park by 12-27.
Rainey know that a victory this Saturday is crucial for their chances of promotion. Defeat for the Magherafelt outfit could see them swap places with Highfield and drop out of playoff contention.
Kick off at Woodleigh Park is at 2.30pm.
