Dungannon starlets lead the way for Ulster and Ireland

DUNGANNON backs, Craig Gilroy and Peter Nelson, were the toast of the town as they scored a try apiece to help Ireland and Ulster respectively to important wins at the weekend.

Wing wonder Gilroy, 21, put in a stunning debut performance at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin as Ireland ran out comfortable winners against Argentina to maintain their all important top eight world ranking.

He opened the scoring with a try on seven minutes using his quick feet to evade five tacklers.

Gilroy has enjoyed a meteoric rise since leaving school and joining Dungannon; he was the first player to score a try in the Aviva Stadium for an Ulster-Leinster combined team before scoring twice on his Ulster debut against Cardiff in late 2010.

A Heineken Cup finalist last season, he scored a brilliant solo effort against Munster in the quarters at Thomond Park while also claiming five tries in two uncapped internationals against the Barbarians and Fiji in the last two seasons.

20-year-old Nelson, who is from Bush, started at full back and claimed his first competitive try for Ulster in their 16-15 win on the road to Treviso in Italy.

His score was the province’s only try of the game and kept the team’s 100 per cent start to the season going in both Heineken Cup and RaboDirect Pro12.
