Eagles Club in training

The Eagles Special Olympics Club in Coalisland were back in training last week at the Primate Dixon Primary School and the Coaches were very pleased at the large turn-out.

The athletes were glad to be back after a lengthy Christmas and New Year break and although took a while to get going were soon back in the swing of things. This is a big year for the Eagles as 11 of the team will take part in the Special Olympics Ulster finals at Antrim Forum in June and they will be joined by our Category One Wheelchair athletes as they make their first appearance at competition level.

Eagles have 3 wheelchair athletes in Michael Henshall, Gerald Vernon and Roger Kernaghan who will by hoping to win Gold and advance to National Games in Limerick in 2014.

The other 11 athletes, Tiernan McShane, Ciaran McCaffrey, Francis McCrory, Gemma Sproule, Shanice Carlin, Daniel McCrory, Seorlaith O’Hagan, Steven Moore, Patrick Trainor, Michael Duddy and Noel Mulgrew will also travel to the Antrim for the two days of competition in the hope of making it to the next stage of progression. These athletes have already surpassed the club expectations as Eagles isn’t officially a year old until April 2013 and to already have 14 athletes in Ulster Finals is remarkable.

The Eagles Club have a number of athletes in training who joined the club after the official entry period for this cycle of games but they continue to train and perfect their chosen sports in preparation for future games and competition. They will have gained more experience and there are exciting prospects in Shannon Nixon, Mark McWilliams, Conan McGerr, Jill Clark, Rory Mullin, Holly Scullion and many others who maybe the Area Games came a little too soon in their Special Olympics training.

Eagles continue to train and prepare every Thursday night in the primary school at 7pm.

The Eagles SO Club had a number of presentations to make on Thursday past as well with Nicola and Lawrence McCrory of Vintage Hill Lights, Galbally presenting the club with a cheque for £1450 raised at the Santa House at their home over Christmas. A staggering amount and thanks to them. The Primate Dixon school also presented the club with new training equipment and activity games and again our thanks to Anne Mitchell and her team. Finally congratulations to the Volunteers who recieved their First Aid and Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adult Certificates on Thursday. The Volunteers give of their time every week free of charge and are also now gaining the required qualifications for the club to advance proper and grow. Well done to all.
